Mihrigul Tursun

At the beginning of 2015, life was good for Mihrigul.
She was happily married with triplets (Moez, Elina and Mohaned) and finishing her studies in Egypt. In May 2015, her life took a drastic turn when she returned to Xinjiang and was arrested at the airport and taken into custody by Chinese authorities. She found herself in one of the many ‘reeducation camps’ that dot the region. Her eight-week-old triplets were stripped from her by officials.
Months later, she was released and told that her son Mohaned had passed away in a local Urumqi Children’s Hospital. A doctor said to her that he had died at some point after an operation. They never explained why her children were admitted to the hospital in the first place. He was less than a year old. This unimaginable experience is something that Mihrigul has been suspicious of and struggles with every single day.
She has not seen her husband since 2015.
She has since learned that upon his return to China, he has been arrested and sentenced to 16 years in a “vocational training centre,” The government’s term for internment camps where they commit cultural genocide every day.
In early 2018, she emigrated to the United States with her two other children. She’s been able to share her incredible story of what went on in these camps during her stay.
“Detainees are beaten, starved, forcibly sterilized and electrocuted. There were 60 people kept in a 430 square foot cell. At nights, 10 to 15 women would stand up while the rest of us would sleep sideways to fit, and then we would rotate every 2 hours. Some people had not taken a shower in over a year.”

In 2017, she went on what she thought was a round trip from Kazakhstan back to China, but instead was stopped by Chinese authorities and imprisoned for 18 months.
